A shared family budget app where personal spending stays personal
Monya lets a family of up to 4 people share one budget on a single Premium plan. Accounts and entries marked as family are visible to everyone in the family, and everything else stays visible only to the person who recorded it. Family members join with an invite code and record spending by voice, screenshot, bank email or Telegram, from any bank and in any currency.
Free version forever. Premium comes with a free trial.
How a family budget works in Monya
- One person creates a family in the app. This needs Premium, which comes with a free trial.
- They create an invite code and send it to the others. A code works for 7 days and for one person.
- Each member enters the code in their own Monya app. Joining is free, because the family shares one subscription.
- Each person decides what to share: a joint card, a cash account for the house, groceries, rent, school fees.
- The family report shows shared spending for the month in total, by member and by category, in the family's currency.
What's shared and what stays private
| Visible to the family | Visible only to you | |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts marked "family" (joint card, household cash) | Yes, with balances | |
| Entries marked "family" (rent, groceries, utilities) | Yes | |
| Your other accounts | Yes | |
| Your personal entries (a gift, lunch with friends, a hobby) | Yes | |
| Editing or deleting an entry | Only by the person who recorded it |
This split is what most families ask for. Shared costs are visible without anyone having to ask, and nobody has to explain a personal purchase.
One Premium for the whole family
One Premium plan covers up to 4 people: for example, two parents and two children, or a couple and a parent. Everyone in the family gets Premium features, including a much bigger AI limit for each person, screenshots, bank emails and unlimited accounts. There's no separate family plan and no extra charge per member.
If the person whose subscription gives the family Premium leaves, the others get an email, and their entries and the family budget stay in place. Anyone in the family can then get Premium for everyone.
Recording is quick for everyone
A shared budget only works if everyone records. Typing every purchase is the usual reason one partner stops. In Monya each person can use the way that suits them:
- say "groceries 63 from the joint card, taxi 12" and Monya creates two entries on the right accounts;
- take screenshots of a banking app and Monya adds only new payments;
- set up automatic forwarding of bank emails to a personal Monya address once;
- on Android, let notifications from chosen banking apps become entries;
- send a message to the Monya bot in Telegram.
Each family member can use a different bank, a different phone and even a different country. Monya doesn't connect to banks, so it doesn't matter which ones you use.
Families with more than one currency
Many families earn in one currency and spend in another, or keep savings abroad. In Monya each account keeps its own currency. The family report converts everything into the family's main currency at current exchange rates, so the monthly total makes sense even when one partner pays in euros and the other in baht.
Leaving a family
A member can leave at any time. Their family entries stop being visible to the others but aren't deleted: they stay in that person's own Monya. If the owner leaves, the next member who joined becomes the owner.
