A budget app for Thailand that works with your Thai bank
Monya is a budget app that works in Thailand with any Thai bank, because it never connects to the bank. You record spending in baht by voice in Thai or English, with screenshots of your banking app, by forwarding bank emails (Bangkok Bank emails are read automatically), or on Android from banking app notifications. The interface is available in Thai, English and 16 other languages.
Free version forever. Premium comes with a free trial.
Why most budget apps don't fit Thailand
Popular budget apps from the US import transactions through bank connections. Thai banks aren't on those lists, so you end up typing every purchase by hand or giving up. Life in Thailand also mixes a lot of payment types: card payments, transfers and QR payments from a banking app, cash at markets and street stalls, sometimes a second account in another currency.
Monya takes what you already have. Your banking app shows a history, your bank sends emails, your phone gets notifications, and you can say what you spent in a few seconds.
Four ways to record with a Thai bank
| Way | How it works in Thailand | Platforms |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshots | Screenshot the history in any Thai banking app; Monya reads Thai and English text and adds only new payments | Android, iPhone, web |
| Bank emails | Forward your bank's payment emails to your Monya address. Bangkok Bank's payment confirmations are read without AI | Android, iPhone, web |
| Voice or text | "lunch 120, Grab 85, 7-Eleven 64" in English or Thai | Android, iPhone, web |
| Notifications | Alerts from the banking apps you choose become entries; Thai-language alerts with baht amounts are understood | Android only |
You can also message the Monya bot in Telegram with text, for example "coffee 65".
Bangkok Bank, tested on real emails
Bangkok Bank can send a payment confirmation email for payments made in its mobile app. Monya was tested on real ones: it reads the amount in baht, the payee (for example a supermarket or a utility company) and the last digits of the account, and puts the entry on your Bangkok Bank account in Monya. No AI is needed for these emails.
For other Thai banks, use screenshots of the banking app, or forward one of the bank's emails to your Monya address and tap Check to see if it's read correctly.
Baht first, other currencies when you need them
Set baht as your main currency and every report and budget is in baht. If you also have a card from home, a Wise account or savings in dollars, add them as accounts in their own currency. Monya keeps each balance in its currency and converts totals to baht at current exchange rates. Say "dinner 1,200 baht from the Wise card" and it's recorded on the right account.
A typical month in Pattaya or Bangkok
| Account | Currency | What goes there |
|---|---|---|
| Thai bank account | THB | Rent, utilities, groceries, QR payments |
| Cash | THB | Street food, markets, songthaew, tips |
| Card from home | EUR or USD | Flights, insurance, subscriptions |
| Wise or another multi-currency card | multi | Online purchases, travel |
All of it shows up in one monthly report, with budgets by category that warn you at 80% and when you go over.
Made for people living in Thailand
Thai is one of the app's three main languages, alongside Russian and English. Data of users outside Russia is stored on Monya's server in Singapore, close to Thailand. Monya is built by a developer living in Pattaya.
Trip mode is useful when you leave Thailand for a visa run or a holiday: spending from the trip is collected separately, so you see what it cost.
Privacy
Your phone turns speech into text, and only the text reaches our server. If your phone can't do that, the recording is transcribed on our server and not stored. Card numbers, account numbers and phone numbers are removed before any text goes to the AI. Screenshots and the text of bank emails aren't stored.
